Safely Remove Hardwarwe

Your machine may still be trying to keep the hardware operational,, have you by chance clicked on the icon in the tray and told the machine to STOP the service to the USB port?

I have a USB hard drive, and often when I do not have the thing plugged in, the little icon is there in the tray, and I have to stop the service to make it disappear,,,

ok so it would be fair to say that I have waited a while for my system to recognize it. I have un installed the drivers and re-installed them and still, it is up there buggin me like hell...any more suggestions?
