On a new dell I keep having a safely remove hardware icon asking me to remove my external dvd drive which camw tih the freakin cmputer. I made it where it always hides the icon, but still I'm sure it would be bettter for it to be recognized as safe! And the drive didn't even come with an installation cd! It came with some roxio installation cd and 2 cds for recording movies. In the instructions it said to put in a cd to install the drive, yet there wasn't one. But it works so I assumed it was ok, but who knows.

Well usually the installation CD is there for options & settings. If it is recognizing a volume then there is no need to worry about it. I never "safely remove" anything that is mine. I don't see how it can hurt me unless I'm copying or installing something on the drive.

That icon is there so you can safely stop your external drive before removing it from the system. That lessens the chance of losing any of your files on that drive.
