router help

i currently have http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124010 this router...i've had it for about 4 years now and i think it's dying or something (not good with computers and such) friend told me routers go bad fairly fast so i'm here asking for some help.

i play call of duty and ping matters in the game. i find that my ping fluctuates from 80-120 in a chicago server which never used to happen. it used to always be around 80 and would never exceed 100. so i'm looking for a replacement, which is cheap (as cheap as you can go) but will still be solid and work for the rest of my house (2 other computers). lmk if you need anymore info and keep in mind simple is good for me.

Honestly, I doubt the router is going bad... Playing COD takes very low bandwidth probably 15k/up/down per sec, when the the router that thing can probably do find downloading at 500k/per sec. Does your connect ever bomb out though considering that its wireless? I had almost the same one that tend to just lose its connection to no matter how close or far it was from any of my computers.

no, it NEVER goes out...the other computers which are further away, sometimes, they lose the connection but never mine...just 2 months ago i was getting a steady ping but now it's all over the place and really effects the registration in the servers.

and i have EVERYTHING in the backround shut off. no messengers, no other games, no nothing.

Thats very interesting... If you were near i would let you borrow one of my routers to see if that fixes the problem but I'm not really sure. But your probably right then, unless its the chicago servers fault. I guess the only thing to do before you buy a new one is borrow someone elses router and test. And set it to only use your mac address. Someone can be stealing your bandwidth from the outside your house. It's happened to me when I investigated the logs, I saw like 2 other Computers using it that didn't belong to mine.

ok i'll try borrowing someone else's router. but before i do that, how can i "check the logs"...? i don't think anyone else is using my comp cause it's set up with a password but who knows...but yeah how can i check whether or not someone is using it outside of my house?

Lol, I don't know what kind of router your using but there can be different ways to do it.
If you know the routers IP address... Try this

And if that doesn't work.

Start - run CMD
Telnet "Router IP address"
