A patch cable is the same as a crossover cable. It allows you to connect an NIC directly to another NIC without having to go through a router/switch

Other way around. Patch cable is the "normal" stuff and crossover allows you to connect two NICs directly but is not required if one or both of the NICs have auto-negotiation (or whatever it's called, there is one name for being able to select the correct speed automatically and another name for being able to select the correct cable type).
