Ran Windows Update and now all freezes!!!!

Nothing should cause conflict nowadays.

When you get new parts, you'll end up having to reformat your drive anyway, so best make sure you back up first before swapping hardware.

After doing that, the computer will be almost new, so you should have no problems installing drivers, etc.

I'd make sure you update though at the start rather than after installing all your drivers though, which is probably the best way to do it (After a clean install).

VIDEO CARD:

Your video card you've posted supports AGP so you can get many motherboards that'll still support that, and if you'd go with AMD, the processor jobs rather easy to get high performance (3000+ AMD 64, etc)

Even though PCI-E motherboards are becoming more known, and so are the video cards, as long as you are not going to want to update your video card, you'll be fine.
Even if you do want to though, there are still some video cards produced in AGP, but PCI-E is taking over now for the faster cards.

I don't think you are exactly a gamer though. Would I be right in thinking that?
