if i wanted to add 1gb of ram to an existing 1gb, would they have to be the same brand or what?

You would just need to make sure they are the same type (DDR,DDR2,DDR3) and the same speed (400,533,600,800,1066).

If you download CPU-Z and run that, you'll find all the info you'll need.

cool thanks. also does it have to be an even number like could i have a total of 3 gb?

EDIT: is 1066 better than 800 performance wise?

No it doesnt ave to be an even number but you have to make sure you dont go past yor motherboards limit (you'll find it on your motherboards Product website OR In the manual).

Also 1066 Does perform better than 800 but unless you can get it for around the same price as 800,it's not worth the extra.

Just to note: You can actually use a slightly higher speed if you want, it'll downclock to the lowest stick you have in. So if you have 1GB of DDR2-800 in and throw a stick of 1GB DDR2-1066, that stick will just run at DDR2-800 speeds. Otherwise, Neo has you covered.

Actually, you should if it is cheaper, but if it's more expensive, don't waste your money. As dude said, it will just downclock to match the speed of either what's in there or the motherboard's limit.
