I want to buy a new printer, and would like to print some photos, but I'm wondering about what resolution of printer I need to get.

assume a not unreasonable camera, (lets say iphone, 8mp 72ppi)

What is the minimum resolution as in printer DPI for a "reasonable" photo print??

I'm only interested in printing something in about a 3x2 inch size. and pictures in sizes 1.5" x 1.5"

I'm talking like the old Polaroid sized photos (if anyone remembers them?) or the little photos that you get from photo booth type pass port machines.

(basically I'm not on about poster sized prints etc...)

so for example, will I want a brand spanking new inket printing 2400 dpi, or will I be ok with a not so fancy, (but faster and cheaper) printer only doing say 600dpi?

Is there a reason you need to do them at home/work?

I would assume any "photo" printer is going to spit out acceptable quality pictures.

As jmacavali said any run of the mill inkjet should do the job.
