Hey All,

I am having a network issue here, and I was hoping you could help me out.

I am trying to network an okidata printer with a linksys router to my dell computer. I am connected to the internet, and I can ping the printer, but windows will not let me add it, or even detect it at all for that matter. I also have a MAC osx networked, and it is online, and gets along with the printer fine. Here are the relevant numbers:

My Comp:
IP 192.168.1.101
Subnet: 255.255.255.000
DNS: 68.87.69.146
68.87.85.98

Mac:
IP 192.168.1.100
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
DNS:68.87.64.146
68.87.75.794

Printer:
IP 192.168.1.90
Subnet: 255.255.255.000

Router:
IP good ole 192.168.1.1

Any help would be appreciated, and would also save me lighting my computer on fire and throwing it out the window :) Thanks.

Jon

Win 2000 and XP
TCP/IP printers are added as "Local" but instead of choosing the port type as "LPT1", you choose a "TCP/IP" port from the list. For most printers, the port is called "Standard TCP/IP Port". However, for some older printers (e.g. Apple Laserwriter 16/600 PS), you must add a Windows Component (available from the MS Windows installation CD) so you can choose the port called "LPR port".

Follow these steps:

==>Start ==>Printers and Faxes ==>Add Printer

==>Local Printer

but UNcheck the box: detect Plug and Play printer

Use existing port: LPT1

==>Create new port

==>Port type:

==>Standard TCP/IP port

(or ==>LPR port for Apple Laserwriter)

Port name or IP number: 10.63.40.81
port name: IP_10.63.40.81 (system will fill this in for you)

*************************
(Note: for LPR port:
IP number: 10.63.40.81
port name: raw ("raw" is required)
*************************

Now, choose the manufacturer and printer model from the lists.
Note: if your printer doesn't show up there, then go to the
manufacturer's web page and download and unpack the appropriate driver.

COOL! I got it to work. All I had to do was put in the IP of the printer instead of the one you gave me. Why does windows have an option to search for network printers if thats not how you install them? Anyhow, all is well now. Thanks.
