Portal or Not?

I really would like to expand Tech Forums! Lately ive been trying to think of idears on how to.

I was thinking maybe making Tech Forums into a portal type site like http://www.phpportals.com

The thing is I don't want to go making to bigger changes and drive members away. I just want to know everyones thoughts on this. Go for a portal? or not?
