poor network connection in games

for some reason, when i connect to my friends computer through a wired router, my computer becomes very jumpy. we are playing 'Lord of the rings: the battle for middle earth 2' and my computer can play it on high settings normally, but i tried it on the lowest settings and it made no difference. i was thinking that i could maybe update my network drivers? but im not sure how to do this as when i click update on the tab, it searches for drivers and says that the best ones are alerady installed. i am curious as to any other things that may cause this, or if there is a way to find out what is causing this.

comp specs:
P4 2.8 processor
2 x 515 corsair ram
128Mb saphire radeon graphics card (9600xt)
and an intel MoBo

was messing around, and found that when in the game, on a network, the CPU usage goes up to 100% (i have dual monitor so can see task manager whn playing. would there be something wrong with my CPU that is causing this? it is more than enough than the game requires so it's not that...
