MIAMI (AFP) - North Carolina police shot and killed an 18-year-old after breaking into a Wilmington home looking for a stolen PlayStation 3 game console, the local district attorney investigating the case said.

"I recognize that any time we're dealing with a loss of a life, we're talking about someone's baby. No one is above the law, and no one is beneath its protection," said Ben David, vowing to "go wherever the truth leads."

Peyton Strickland, 18, was killed Friday, after police broke down his door in response to a reported robbery he is accused of carrying out with his friend Ryan Mills, 20, whom police presumed to be armed and dangerous.

Strickland and Mills were suspected of robbing and beating a university student after he bought two PlayStation 3 computer game consoles on November 17, court documents said.

The popular game console, made by Sony, was launched on that day, as fans and profiteers mobbed stores nationwide to grab limited stocks.

One game console was found at the house police raided, and another was sold on the Internet, according to court documents.

Local media said three police officers involved in the raid have been suspended.
