The number one reason pets are neutered in the US is to prevent them from reproducing. There are thousands of unwanted dogs and cats born every year. When unwanted animals end up in a shelter and no one adopts them, they end up being euthanized.

All of the dogs and cats I have had in my life have been neutered.

Yeah, both our dogs have been done too, male and female. The male was a rescue dog and one of their conditions of us keeping him was that we got him neutered... for the reasons you mentioned.
