PC freezing whilst playing MP3

Can anyone help ?
I am running Windows XP on a 1.7 ghz P4, 768Mb of ram. The problem I keep getting is that if I play MP3 via any media software or play a game which uses MP3 for sound effects my machine will suddenly freeze and all I can do is restart it. The machine might freeze within minutes or go for hours before freezing......Any ideas would be grateful

check your sound card, and re-install the drivers for the sound card, that should do it
