I think it's because of the Blu-Ray technology that adds to the cost. Plus the cell processor technology is so proprietory which naturally makes everything by Sony so much more expensive.
Yup. That's why Sony's move of embracing Blu-Ray completely is risky. It could help them win or could completely sink them.
The Cell isn't completely proprietary. It was co-developed by Sony, Toshiba and IBM and some companies are planning to use it in servers or blade servers. There might even be some use for it in the military.

The PS3 is half-assed. The moment you plug in your PS3, expect several firmware updates. Yes, that is how half-assed it is. The firmware isn't even complete.
