New PC build -RECEIVED- :D

Re: New PC build definite :D

I dont thik the currect exchange rate helps UK-US price comparrision because if we buy goods from the us we get a much better exchange rate than they do buying goods from us

Re: New PC build definite :D

Well, that article is completely right. What's going to limit you most in overclocking is your motherboard and RAM here. Really though, I'd expect the E6750 to do better. I can already get my E6600 up to 3.9 GHz...200 MHz is not all that big of a deal. Probably because the motherboards have problems handling such insane FSBs...

Stepping is basically just the "revision number" of the CPU:

Re: New PC build definite :D

Ah, so I should be able to confirm what stepping I'm buying? I'm guessing a later step isn't always the best choice though.
Well confusing, haha

Re: New PC build definite :D

Maybe, maybe not. Depends on the seller I think...

And about the RAM, you'll want at least DDR2-1000, higher if you want to overclock well.

Re: New PC build definite :D

Really?

Custom PC managed to overclock a E6420 with the ABIT board I've specified, and the same RAM (667mhz) specified, and got it up to 3.2GHZ.
All they used extra to do this, was a Tuniq Tower, which isn't all that expensive.

Building a computer can be hard in the end :p

This one isn't overclocked that I have now, due to the fact that it didn't seem to let me, so experience isn't something I have in that factor.

EDIT:

I think I will go for 800mhz RAM to make sure, and will get the E6750, and the Abit P35 at 1333mhz :)
I think I'll stick with the 320MB version of the 8800GTS too, because even though from reviews, it has a 20% drop in performance; this drop only seems to come into play when you get into the higher resolutions, and I'm just not interested in that.

But, from what I've heard, on second thoughts, maybe getting a 8800, isn't the best choice as of now after all, and i should stick with a lower 7000 series card for the time being.

Thoughts on this?

Re: New PC build definite :D

That's totally different. The E6420 uses a 1066 MHz FSB. The E6750 uses a 1333 MHz FSB. Your RAM needs to be faster to keep up with the higher FSB. I have no idea why you would want to get value RAM (because that's what DDR2-667 is) with a great processor like that. At LEAST get DDR2-800. Just keep in mind that your RAM will severely limit you in overclocking.

I also guarantee that you won't be able to get up to those speeds, even if you got the exact same hardware. They're much more experienced overclockers than you or I.

Re: New PC build definite :D

Thanks for the help :)
I may very well go for DDR800 speed RAM in that case.

Haha, I don't really know too much about new technology :(
You can't keep up, however hard you try, to all the advances.

NEW BUILD UPDATE!

Right, I'm really tight when it comes to spending money, but I know I'll be happy with my own PC :)

Revisioned specs are as follows:

Quad Core Q6600, oh yea!
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=16406

Abit IP-35 PRO (1333mhz support)
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=17580

OCZ Reaper 2x1024 800mhz
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=17681

2x 320GB Seagate HDD's for RAID1
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=13888

Creative Sound Blaster X-FI Music Extreme Edition - Currently out of stock :(

Either this Zalman LED CNPS9500, or the Arctic Cooling Freezer. Which one do you think is best based on experience. Overclocking especially?
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=11508

Antec 900 case :D
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=16013

650watt Silent ATX
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=12394

Simple NEC DVD burner
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=16379

You may wonder why I've dropped the video card at the moment. Well thats because I don't know wheather I should get a 8000 series card yet.

Opinions? I could probably buy a 7000 series for much cheaper, wait until revisioned 8000 series cards come out, and then buy it. What do you think?

Re: New PC build definite :D

That processor can easily hit 3Ghz, thats what I have mine on as my daily overclock, I've had it up to 3.9 without raising voltages. Also, you may want to consider the 640MB GTS if your going to be running games and stuff at a higher resolution.

I think you should edit your post to say i've had it to 3.9 without manually raising the voltages. There is no way your running a E6600 at 3.9ghz with a 1.35Vcore. If so i'll go easy show me 1hr orthos with a everest log showing the Vcore.

get the 640mb card
320 is bad

Disregard this statement. Personal opinions are irrelevent. By toms hardware reviews I can make my PNY8800gts 320meg beat a 768meg 8800 Ultra. Of course the ultra will kill it at higher resolutions but I don't run higher resolutions. If you don't the 320 will be fine.

Haha, no you didn't. You probably just have it set to automatically select the voltage.

I've also heard the current E6600's aren't so good. The E6750 sounds alright.

I have also heard the new batch's are 4ghz capable chips for the E6750.

Could someone explain this stepping? I've heard it mentioned somewhere else too, but couldn't make much sense of it... Is there any way of finding out what a chip has before you buy it?

Stepping is just a revision of the CPU. The newer the revision they fix things like heat monitoring and or minor bugs they find in previous line.

Maybe, maybe not. Depends on the seller I think...

And about the RAM, you'll want at least DDR2-1000, higher if you want to overclock well.

Thats not really true. Say you want to run 1:1 on a E6600 @ 4ghz. FSB 1778 the ram would only have to run 889MHz to run a 1:1 ratio. If you get some normal PC6400 with the D9micron chip you'll have no problem overclocking ram easy to 900. Thats with lower timings increase them to say normal DDR2-1000 which is 5,5,5,15 and you can easily push them past 1000Mhz.

Stray from the X-FI if your running vista. There current driver support is horrible. I'm running a driver thats like 8 months old because the new one's junk.

May want to go with a bigger psu that way you don't have to upgrade later if you plan to SLI.

Quad core will be great for multi tasking the E6750 will clock higher so its going to be faster in pretty much every game today. Granted when multi core games come out you'll be already to go.

If your going Zalman spend the Extra money and get the 9700 series.
