my mates just brought a new lap top but wants to put stuff that was on his old one onto his new one. whats the best way to do this? can he hook them both up with a usb lead?

It's possible, but I think you'd need some software to mediate for you, although I've never done it (or heard of it being done). I did a quick search on Google, but didn't find any free...(not to say there's not, just not as obvious as some).

Wireless works great, and best of all if there's anything sizable, Ethernet. A nice crossover cable and you're good to go. (Or over his own local network, if he has one.)

Then there are CDs, DVDs, but those are tedious to use...for me anyhow.
 
I saw around 5-6 years ago in PCworld (the shop not the mag) a USB to USB networking kit I have no idea what the brand was though.
I will google around for a bit and see what I can find for you.

It looks like you need a special USB cable but I don't think it would cost much.
