Thieves Nab 180 PS3s in Japan

PlayStation 3 mania continues

Two weeks ago, $1.9 million USD worth of Xbox 360s were stolen in the United Kingdom. Robbers managed to raid a depot center and a cargo truck and as a result carried off roughly 4,000 of the consoles. With Xbox 360s retailing for between $386 to $579 in the UK, the thieves are looking to score big in the black market.

Given the popularity surrounding the latest game consoles on the market, this PlayStation 3 news item is not surprising in the least and just goes to show what lengths criminals will go to score a buck. Engadget came across a Japanese news report stating that 180 PS3s were stolen from an Ibaraki warehouse in Naka City.

The 180 PS3s were valued at 9,500,000 Yen ($82,258 USD) and are likely to start flooding the black market and online auction sites like eBay. eBay for example shows completed auctions for the 60GB PS3 going for between $800 to $1,200 USD plus shipping and handling (usually in the neighborhood of $60 USD).

The PS3 frenzy shows no sign of stopping anytime soon. With low production numbers and high consumer demand, almost anything goes when it comes grabbing a hold of PS3. Consumers are relegated to camping out to get one from a retail store at MSRP, buying one from an online retailer in an outrageously priced bundle, paying an exuberant amount of money on eBay to score one in time for Christmas or simply stealing one. In the last case, a UNCW student met an untimely end after being accused of stealing two PS3s in Wilmington, NC.

There is too much of greedy people buying them and selling them at huge profits on ebay etc so there are none left for the innocent people. Its getting ridiculus

Buy them legit, from a big store I say. People are using the fact they are rare at the moment, to their advantage, making people pay thousands, when they don't realise they can wait, and get it much cheaper.
