Have recently caught and removed virus from my computer. virus was prety hardcore, took control of my security center and locked me out of installed AVG, Ad-Aware ect..
Eventuality unplugged phone line and got Ad=Aware running after several reboots and then could run Comodo and AVG to clean system. Synse then have run AVG(free, (I have AVG free installed)) in safe mode and have hopefully cleansed system, although my computer is running slower through the internet and taking longer to load site pages. Since the virus my media players RealPlayer and Windows Media Player keep coming up with general error or windows does not support this type of file format for example through internet radio stations that I regularly play through them wont at the moment. Have reinstalled media programs several times each but still no go> Any suggestions or help please ?????

I need you to :

Uninstall the affected media players.

Run:
ccleaner - Make sure all boxes are checked and run the registry cleaner as well
Cleanup

Then update to IE8 and any Windows Updates that need to be installed

Open msconfig and go to Startup tab, uncheck all entries and then recheck AVG, reboot.

Then run CCleaner again along with the registry cleaner.

Then reinstall WMP and see if it will play, then go to the next one and see if it will play.

This information wasn't relevant because my OS is Vista, and having surfed around on the net it seems as though windows media player can't be uninstalled from Vista. I have the original Windows Vista Ultimate OS start up CD's so is a reboot possible and which sites information could be trusted to give the right instructions for this. Or is there an uninstall component on my OS or PC that will remove Vista or parts for a reboot?

Try this

Go to Start - > Type Run in the Search Box - > type regsvr32 wmp.dll and then press enter. DLL succeeded message should appear

or download MP11 and reinstall it if the above doesnt work

I never had any luck uninstalling WMP in any windows OS, if you are trying to replace the wmp Dll then get a fresh copy of wmploc.dll and wmp.dll and if this is a 32bit system or 64 bit system this file is located in system32 and syswow for 64 bit, so be sure to get the correct ones for your system type.

there are quite a few wmp dll's so maybe you would have to replace all of them..?
You will need to take ownership of the windows directory and then end the tasks in task manager if they are in use when trying to replace.

have rebooted my PC with my OS disk and proceed with the reinstall of vista the choice for parts of vista was there but not knowing my way around computers very well I went for a whole reboot. evrey thing went fine untill the end when I had to enter activation code and the program could not connect to the internet to regester my copy(I got around this with a phonecall and some security numbers given to me by the wizard )
After starting up windows again I couldent get my updates uploaded with the mesage 80072efd appearing(it says my firewall settings wont allow it but I don't have an installed firewall). then when trying to access ihe internet via explorer there is no connection although I am receiving a signal through my wireless adapter from a router;? AQny ideas on how to get my explorer online~ Cheers^
