Whats the difference between Microsoft Updates and Windows Updates?

If I was wanting to perform a Microsoft Update, where do I go?

If I was wanting to perform a Windows Update, where do I go?

You may have just had a blank there, so I'll forgive you

Windows updates is just for Windows, and comes standard in Windows XP up to SP2
You can elect to agree to have Microsoft updates when doing manual Windows Updates online (you get this huge message box, saying "Update to Microsoft Updates")

Microsoft updates are everything installed on your system by Microsoft (ie Windows Office MSE etc etc etc)

I see what you are saying now. I have always used "Microsoft Update" since 2005 or so. With Vista, 2008 and 7, they dont use the Web Based Update any longer.

How does turning off MSU speed up the pc?
Whats wrong with MSE sending information back to MS?
Why would you disable updates and manually do them?

Scans are complete. Everything appears normal. Thanks again Osiris and Kimsland. You both taught me so much in the last couple days.

My problem is this. What is wrong with WGA? It is a security measure put in place to check for validty of your software. Eset, Trend Micro and so many more do it. Get over that Big Brother is watching me fear as it doesnt report that stuff anymore.

The updates thing, yeah i can agree with. But it does NOT call home. It connects to the servers to get the Virus Definition. Hey guess what, Avira does that as well if you stay updated.

That is more conspiracy theory than actual facts for users now. I have personally seen the information sent out by MSE to the servers and it contains nothing of vital importance. Not to mention the fact that you have to PASS WGA in order to install it, which means your already legit, so what is the fear?

If your biased that is fine. But dont go feeding bad information to people just because you dont like a certain product. That information you posted on computerforums is so wrong on so many levels. All that does is get people even more paranoid and puts even more distrust in a company and product. That post sounds like it comes from a Apple Camp than from someone who uses windows.

I can live with your choice of Avira, but simply put you should not feed false information to those that use other products to try and scare them to the product of your choice. You said it yourself already, it is their choice to make. It is not your choice to make for them.

Could you post the information sent out by MSE to the servers about your system? I would be interested to see whats there.

If you want to opt out of Spynet, you will need to edit the registry

Type regedit in the run command box and press enter to open the registry editor. Navigate and select the following key on the left pane:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Antimalware\SpyNet
Now Click on the Edit menu and click Permissions to open the Permissions for SpyNet settings box. Select your user name in the Group or user names and check mark the box Full Control to Allow editing of this key. Note that this maneuver will give the selected user full control over the SpyNet key only.

Click Apply and OK your way out. On the right pane of the registry editor, right click SpyNetReporting and click Modify.

Change the Value data to 0 for no membership to Microsoft SpyNet.
  • A value of 1= Basic Membership
  • A value of 2= Advanced Membership
If you are successful in changing the value to 0, your Microsoft SpyNet screen in Microsoft Security Essentials should look like this:

Be extremely careful when editing your registry. Even the most skilled techies avoid regedit whenever possible. One wrong key stroke could destroy your operating system.
