Machine defends rampaging robot

FoTW This week we ran a short news item about a robot that had gone on a rampage at a California hospital. The evil being, we explained, went bonkers, and refused to do its job of dispensing pills, instead preferring to terrorise the patients, and break in to private medical examinations.

Not everyone appreciates our efforts to counter the Rise of The Machines(TM), however:

The current state of robotic technology or artificial intelligence is not such that a robot could REFUSE to do anything.

Do not report such garbage to your readers. I'm sure that you think it makes for "lively entertainment", but you are degrading the publics opinion about a set of technology that they already know nothing about.

What you have claimed in your article shows a level of ignorance that could only be topped by a high school crack addicted drop out.

If anything there was a glitch in the software. They were probably running a Microsoft operating system which inevitably crashed.

People are going to have a hard enough time accepting a machine that will one day be more intelligent than they are. Don't add to their problems please!

about the "Computers will be more intelligent than us"
I very much doubt that. the computers we use run on binary, which only gives black and white answers. to a computer, anything is always black or white, right or wrong, true or false.
us humans often see many different alternatives to one problem. we may not think as fast, but what we think makes the difference.

You clearly arent very learned on the whole theory of AI. There are several different approaches to it, and it will not be done on the Base2 number system that computers currently use. It will all be done with quantum computers and quantum physics. nOur current computers cannot do AI, which is why it is not fully developed. I've know a good amount on the subject of AI, and once it is brought to fruition, surpassing our human thought will be remarkably easy.

Did you know that it is estimated that ffrom birth to death our brain uses approximately (if you could scale in bytes and whatnot) we would have only used about 14GB worth of storage. Once AI is rightly developed, developing it further wil not be difficult in the least.

Havent you seen movies? It makes perfect sense. If you think that AI will not surpass human intellect, you are very wrong.
