Looking for a server

i know pretty close to nothing about servers and there workings other than that they definetly are different from normal PC's. i am looking to acquire a small server for home use to run game servers for me and some friends. and expected load of 1-3 people and bots in games from FPS like CS/quakewars to rts like homeworld/universe at war. can anyone give me some recommendations on types of servers, mybe give me some listings from ebay or something, and a recommended OS that i could use being a vista user. looking to spend under 1000, dont want some new super server, just a basic middleman for me and my friends.

i ran a cs server using an old p4 system i had laying around
anything will run a cs server really

ya, but i also want to run things like quakewars and rts games that tend to lag a high end system with enough going on.
