So right now I am using Ubuntu Dapper, and it is alright but I can't say that I am really impressed with it. I would want something based upon Debian, and maybe Gnome but I suppose I would be willing to give KDE a try. I will probably just try straight Debian, but if there is anything else that anyone would reccomend over it I would like to know about it. I am just looking right now, if I were to change it would be somewhere in the next couple of months.

Thanks

Since you have experience with a Debian based distro, I would recommend you jump from Debian Sarge to Debian Etch, which is considered "unstable". It is a little rough around the edges, but is constantly updated, and is expected to be considered stable by the end of this year or the beginning of the next one. However, if you want something almost completely stable and bug-free, you're gonna want Sarge, despite the fact that it is getting older by the minute (all of the packages are "frozen" when a release becomes stable, and this happened to Sarge about a year ago).

http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ for Etch (testing) and
http://www.us.debian.org/releases/sarge/debian-installer/ for Sarge (stable)

Okay, thanks. I don't mind a few bugs here and there, so I might try out Etch in a while. And if I can't stand KDE it won't be impossible to install GNOME?

Wow, thats a huge list to choose from (and I thought Debian was KDE?). Thanks Jake, I will go through tomorrow and look at some of them. But like I said before, I will probably put off switching for a while. Too much work ;)

you can install whatever GUI you want with debian[/url]

Gnome is what comes with the distribution. You may use KDE, Blackbox, Fluxbox, XPDE, Enlightenment, whatever you want. Gnome is what comes with it though.

SUSE has been recommended to me as well, but it also uses RPMs and the like. How much different would it be to using DEBs and apt-get and such?
