Exactly right. You can't do anything to the primary screen without having it effect the secondary screen. iMacs have (depending on the year of the unit) either a Thunderbolt or Mini-DVI port. The newer ones have Thunderbolt. There are adapters to send it out to HDMI and such.

To the OP, don't worry about messing up your screen. It will be fine. :)
 
Shouldn't you be able to disable the screen in settings while watching your movie?

I don't know how to do that, I have basically got a black screen saved it as a jpeg which I open when in watching movies. Nothing technical about this I know but it does the trick. Due to it being the main monitor on the iMac I think this has something to do with it not disabling I may be wrong though.
