Laptops: Core i7 or High-end Core 2 Duo? (limited budget)

I mostly will use it in my room most of the time, but I would like portability for when I need to connect it to my digital piano downstairs, that's why I need a laptop.

@Computear: I don't feel the need to have a minimalistic laptop and a gaming desktop, because I don't game most of the time. I would just like a laptop that has gaming capability for those little times that I do want to play. I'm also thinking of getting a 22-24" monitor and basically using my laptop as a desktop, when I'm using the laptop in my room.

@GhostGT: Nope, I do not go to USC. I go to UC Davis :)

Thanks for all the ideas guys, I think I'm leaning towards the i7 laptops.
