Laptop shuts off by itself even when plugged in

I changed the settings on the power settings to never turn off when plugged in so I know it's not the power settings.

It's also plugged in the wall through the ac adapter and the OS indicated the charger is infact working and charging the laptop.

It does however say that the battery is always at 0%. Could it be that the battery is bad so the laptop won't stay on for long even when plugged in the wall ac adapter?

Post the make and model of the lappy you have the problem with. And what operating system you have.

HP ZE5200 using windows XP home ed.

At first it stayed on a while without shutting off.. but now it seems to shuttoff quite quickly. I can't even get a virus scan done without it shutting down.

Alright, now it's shutting off before it even gets to windows so I can rule out power management issues. Should it run when plugged into the adapter even if the battery is bad?

Usually, it works with a good battery or without one. Try working with the lappy with the battery out.
