Laptop Monitor 'refreshes'

My girlfriends laptop has a strange problem in which, when turning on her computer, once everything has started up the monitor goes black, and then very slowly loads the screen again, similar to when you close a game and all the windows are trying to load again.

Her laptop is an HP Compaq nx6325. The issue has only started happening recently. Do you guys have any ideas?

If too much is loading at boot time it can affect the video performance. My old Toshiba would do the same thing until I installed more physical ram.
But to keep from having to plop out money try going in to msconfig and disabling what really doesn't need to load when the system is booted up.

The laptop is running XP Pro.
@setishock - I've tried to optimise the system quite a bit... using msconfig / services.msc and the like have improved things but the problem hasn't changed. The video performance is fine, the flicker seems to happen regardless of how calm the system is.

Go into the Bios and try resetting everything back to default,and updating your drivers.
