pete.i hit the nail on the head with the key being part of BIOS. None of the windows 8 laptops I've worked with have stickers anywhere and the install disk picked up the proper version (home vs. pro) and the product key without any interaction on my part.
As for the network. I don't see it mentioned so I'm going to ask the stupid question: what happens in safe mode with networking? Otherwise an easy way to test if it's IP-stack related or hardware the quick easy way would be to plug in a USB-based adapter that's known good (I can't imagine not having one at Staples) to see if you can connect with that.
