K6-2 Heatspreader

Just a quick ponder, why exactly did AMD equip their K6-2/K6-III processors with IHS's and left the Athlons and Durons with an exposed core?

"The reason that there is no heat spreader plate on Socket A processors
is that it actually impedes heat flow. The Athlons and Durons dissipate
a lot more heat than the K6 family did, and AMD felt that it was
necessary for the heatsink to be in direct contact with the core.
Assuming you have a properly installed Socket A heatsink, you will
actually get better cooling than you would if there was a pre-installed
heat spreader plate in between."
