Is my HDD dead? What is the problem?

Hi guys, I got an ASUS Eee PC netbook, one of the little ones with no CD drive. It boots up to the windows logo loading screen (XP) then freezes and I get a blue screen with an error message. It tells me to run CHKDSK /F, however I'm unable to do this as I can't get to the console or anything. Is the HDD bad? And if it isn't then are there any programs I can use from boot to repair this?
Thanks very much

It could be your hard drive or it could easily be your Windows installation. You'll definitely have to boot off of a flash drive as mentioned above to install Windows. I recommend you also install PartedMagic on a flash drive to get your files off of the hard drive and establish new partitions for a fresh install of Windows.

PartedMagic: start

If you can boot to the point of displaying the Windows logo then, no, your HDD isn't dead but it may have problems. Have you tried going into SafeMode to attempt to run chkdsk? As soon as you see the Win logo, press F8.
