In the comic, Tony Stark had heart problems that almost killed him. Him and a doctor designed the chest plate that has his life support in it. He then designed the rest of the first big and clunky suite around the chest plate. He turned in to a drunk, threw his life away and I lost interest in the story line. He has way too many issues like a lot of the DC Comics characters do.
