IRC?

Being idle as you said. I physically close out of whatever program I'm using which disconnects me from the channel.

Sorry to bump, but just wanted to add that I assume M4TT was talking about IRC bouncers, whereby you're always on IRC, but you're not always actually logged into your bouncer (BNC). BNC's keep you identified, and in all channels you wish, and you can connect straight to them, so you don't have to set up auto-joins and auto-identifies for each time you log into IRC.

Oh ok. I'm not too big on IRC so don't know much about it. I just use mIRC to log into the Quakecon channel here and there.

They actually have (had?) an IRC-like chatroom at deviantart called IdleRPG. You gained levels the longer you idled. If you entered anything in the chat, you would lose experience.

It is very similar to that, except with a BNC, you get can the last x lines of chat from each channel as you join.
