Iphone 6 repair and new phone advice

My Iphone 6 basically died he other day as i went to update the ios over the wifi, it began to update so i left it plugged in to the charger whilst it updated. When i came back the screen was blank but the phone was on as i could feel the vibration from the mute button and it was recognised in itunes so i updated the software through my laptop in order to see if it would bring back the display. This didn't solve it so i took it to a local tech repair shop who said that it was the backlight ic and i was better off taking it into apple so i booked in for an appointment and was told that to fix it would be £290 and that the problem was on the motherboard. After this i took it to another tech shop just out of hope there was something apple missed and the man noticed that you could see the apple logo faintly when turning it on so he said the backlight was gone so i left it with him, when i came back he said that he changed the backlight fuses and there was nothing he could do and that the new chip board would be £300 so I would be better off with a new phone. The phone is fully functional minus the obvious issue the touch, speaker, camera all still work as i managed to mirror the screen to check.

Before i bin the iphone 6 is there any advice to how i could bring it back from the dead? If not I'm thinking about investing in a samsung galaxy s7 edge and was wondering if it is suitable for my needs.

common uses of my phone
I mostly use my phone for
Social media (FB, Twitter, snapchat, instagram)
monitor my runs
listening to podcast in my car on the way to work
listening to music through headphones
socialising

any advice would be appreciated.

Well if you wanted to try and fix it yourself, sounds like you'd need to get a new digitizer+LCD assembly, and then follow a guide on replacing the front panel assembly:
https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPhone+6+Front+Panel+Replacement/31738

The actual part is fairly cheap (anywhere from $20 on eBay to $70 from somewhere like iFixIt), but the the shops are charging for labor, which looks like it takes a while - hence the costly repair.

thanks for the reply!

when I took it to the final tech place he did try it with a new screen, don't know if that helps?

If they tried a new screen already, then the apple techs are most likely right and it's a motherboard issue. If your tech also changed the fuses on the mobo and that's not helped, then yeah you're out of luck :/ new phone time unfortunately.

Something in the display circuit is dead/dying; annoyingly if you had the skills you could likely fix it for a pittance, but if you had to hire someone with those skills to do the fix you'll likely be looking at a bill big enough to just say screw it and get a new phone instead.

cheers for the reply buddy

yeah after the fuses didin't fix it I assumed so. Annoyying as in the right light the display can be seen very slightly. would guessing it would be a case of finding the fault on the board and soldering in a replacement ?

Yep pretty much! Could be something as simple as part of the circuit shorting somewhere else; fix that one tiny issue and bam your whole phone is working again. So yeah, definitely annoying :p then again, could also be a fried chip that needs to be reflow soldered with a mask and everything.

Here's an example of someone troubleshooting a faulty mobo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpAJo71Km1w

haha cheers man, I think its abit out of my skill range  so looks like a new phone is going to have to be the way forward, any recommendations?

I've been buying XiaoMi phones for myself/family. They're working out great so far! Hell cheap too, I think my Redmi 3 Pro was $220AUD total including shipping from GearBest, and that was like a year ago now.

Just be sure to check and make sure that whatever phone you look at has the cellular bands you need. Xiaomi has some great phones but only a very few of them have the 4G bands that would work in the US; I am unfamiliar with the bands used in the UK, however. I usually use GSMArena.com to find the bands but sometimes the info is not there, so thankfully a brief internet search will usually get you the info.
