Internet connectivity issue

Trying to figure out what my problem is here...

I use comcast for my internet and a wired trendnet router. Every so often, I just lose my internet connection out of nowhere. It's not very frequent, but very frustrating when it happens. Usually when it disconnects, simply unplugging and replugging the router fixes the problem, but sometimes I have to go into the configuration for the router and release/renew the wan address for it.

I called trendnet and they of course blame comcast, saying their modem isn't providing the router with the right information (can't remember exactly how they worded it). I call comcast and of course they blame the router and say it's faulty. So since both companies are just looking to dodge the blame, can someone tell me where my problem would actually be in a situation like this? I mean I'm assuming it's probably my router, but want to make sure before I buy another. Also if it is the router, what are some good reliable brands out there as far as dependability and speed?

The best way to tell is to unplug the router and go from modem to computer. If the problem goes away, then it's the router.

I'd bet it is the router since you don't have to unplug the modem for the internet to come back on. In my opinion, I like Linksys and NetGear, though I also like TrendNet (it's what I have at home....lol).

I have a the $20 model from trendnet at home also. It has been running strong for at least 2 years now so they can be dependable. For the price of them I'd just buy another unless you want more features. Too bad you don't live close to me (we don't have comcast) because I'd sell you mine for $10. After dealing with a bad signal from the cable company I'm curious to find out if it is actually your gear so let us know please.

I think you should call the specialist to your home because it's really hard to fix such problems from distance

This isn't exactly the best solution. I think the solution presented are just fine in trying to fix this problem from a distance.

would've replied sooner but went away for the week. anyway, one thing i did forget to mention as well is that i have a laptop connected to the router as well which never seems to have any issues. the laptop runs vista and my other computer has run both xp and win 7 and has had the same disconnecting issues. i also tried changing which plugs i used, and i still only have the problem with my desktop.

well, guess at this point the only way to really narrow down what the issue is would be to replace the router and see if that fixes the problem. oh, and as far as connecting the computer directly to the modem to see if it solves the problem, that won't tell me anything as it might work for a direct connection but not assigning the proper information for the router for multiple connections, so i don't think that would be an effective way to rule out the modem, but if it were i can tell you with a direct connection to the modem it has no issues.
