Look for a 120GB hard drive - that should be more than enough.

AMD RULES - he has made no suggestion that he wants to open up the PC and install hard drives, and then drivers, himself, so don't give stupid suggestions.

Ok, we have the HDD figured out, but what about everything else? Here's the system requirements for n track and fruity loops.

n track: CPU: Pentium III-700 or better, 256 Mb RAM

FL:Windows 95/98/Millenium/2000/XP, Latest version of DirectX and DirectX-supported video & soundcard recommended, 30 MB free disk space, Minimum Pentium II processor required; Pentium III processor or higher recommended, 16 MB memory required; 64 MB memory or higher recommended, Boxed version needs CD-ROM drive

So they aren't too demanding. I was thinking 512mb RAM, winxp, dvd burner(the kind that burn dvds and cds), some firewire/usb ports. As for a cpu, soundcard, videocard, and mobo, I don't know anything about those. is there anything i'm forgetting?

For hard-core music editing, I'd recommend a P4 or higher cpu. The AMD 3200+ could accomodate you nicely. This ASUS mobo looks pretty stable, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131570, if you're looking for an AMD build. Try to get at least one gig of ram, you never know, you might need it. Get a good sound card like the Sound Blaster Audigy line. G'luck, hope I helped.

Well I wouldn't consider it "hard-core music editing", but I was thinking of getting a P4 intel CPU anyway. I was thinking about getting a GB, but only if it's not that much more. I was also thinking about getting a sound blaster audigy card, but wanted to hear what everyone had to say. Thanks for the help.

get a creative labs sound card. id reccomend a gig of ram because it will make your computer run much faster.

If your buying retail, look for these as minimum:

Pentium 4 2.8ghz or Athlon 64 3200+ (2ghz)
512MB RAM
120GB hard drive
DVD/CD burner
6200 graphics (not TurboCache unless you have 1GB RAM)

Then, definitely buy a Creative X-Fi sound card - it blows the Audigy out of the water, and according to my mate who has it, it makes EVERYTHING sound better. If you don't want to fit it yourself, take the card and the PC down an internet cafe or somewhere like that and pay for them to fit it.

Trust me, it would be worth it

Thanks for all your input and help, but I think a lot of this is overkill. Again, I'm new to home recording and I'm not looking for anything high quality. I think I've got a good idea of what I'm looking for now. Thanks.
