I have an IBM thinkpad t42 and it will not boot, I tried f8 to get safe mode to display with no luck, tried remove battery. , I always get the the same screen with just a blinking cursor in the top left screen and I do not get passed that, any ideas?

yeah i am starting to think the same, thanks.. i will see again about the code issue.

i think hard-drive, we had a few of these laptops at work and the hard-drives failed in most of them. Can you go in to the BIOS and see the hard-drive in there?

+1 at what JCB said. If your thinkpad has any special drive modes, toggle it on and off and see if either setting produces any positive result.

This happens sometimes on newer laptops when SATA-native settings are wrong, but since the T42 will be IDE/PATA i don't think that would be the issue.
