After having my 4 year old Compaq Presario F 700 freeze up all the time and the battery only lasting an hour or so, I went down to Staples and got a Toshiba Satellite U 845-S406 laptop. It's the last one they had and it's got Windows 7 on it, which I like. I had heard a couple of bad comments about Windows 8. I can always upgrade later if I want to. It's almost half the weight of the old Compaq, has 6x the Ram, and 6x the HD size. It has the chiclet type keyboard which harder to get used to and has no CD player. I bought a CD player that will plug into it. I have some software on CDs that I'll probably transfer. It also has a 32 GB SSD drive that supposedly speeds up the boot speed. I got it for $ 640 which is about $ 80 less that it is sold on Amazon. I saw it listed for $ 799 in a couple of places on the internet.
I haven't read all of the instruction manual yet. I like the backlit keyboard too.
