Personally I charge nothing to build computers, or fix them. I rely on tips from the people im building for, most i've got is $150 and ive built about 5 for people. I dont like charging people so if I ever end up owning my own store ill have a good reputation around town. Also I can get parts 200% cheaper than can be bought locally (I usually build about $1400 rigs which would cost about $2500+ to get locally), I have no idea why my town has such a high markup (almost no other towns charge as much) on tech stuff but it could be useful for me in the future.

If your ordering online, thats exactly the reason. Local stores have a crap ton of overhead and the turn around time for products in a small town computer shop is very long. They have to charge that much to stay alive.
