how come hdd displays wrong gb of space i got?

hey guys i just noticed that i have a 200 gb harddrive and whe ni right lick my local disk c / properties it says 189 gb that i have but then be4 that it says capacity 200,000,000,000 bytes

any ideas?

Hard drive manufacturers scale around 1000 instead of 1024 so they can advertise larger sizes. 1Kb to a hard drive manufacturer is 1000 bytes, not 1024 as it should be.

he just explained it! the companies pretend that 1GB=1000mb 1mb = 1000KB and 1kb = 1000b wheras 1gb = 1024mb 1mb = 1024 kb 1kb = 1024b .. uve got 200gb of space, but each gb is only worth 1000mb, meaning ur losing 24mb each GB of space

after the decimal conversion and compensating for the cluster size, you would actually have about 185gb's if your used NTFS.

what are u on win98?

the higher cluster size u use, the more space u loose to a degree from its stated actual size.

did u format it lower then windows default 4k cluster size?(i think thats default) , or did u format it to Fat32 instead of NTFS?

I didnt know you could use Fat32 on a HDD bigger than 40GB.....

FAT32 has a volume limitation of 2 terrabtyes. that's 2048 Gigabytes with a file size limit of 2GB

ok bigtime this is what is happening. When you see 100 Gb advertized it is actually 100 Gb in decimal numbering. The computer dosnt read it as decimal but as binary.

Binary on left decimal on the right
0 - 0
1 - 1
10 - 2 (so what every is in the second value of binary is 2)
11 - 3
100 - 4 (the third binary value is 4... it doubles each time)
1000 - 8
10000 - 16
1000000 - 64
1000100 - 68
100000000 -512
1000000000 - 1024 (thats a Gb in binary)

So because binary doubles each digit like that a 10 digit binary number is 1024. It sounds bigger if you put it in decimal (1000) so people will buy it dont worry tho you wernt ripped off. Its just the conversion difference.
