How close are we to deep dive / full immersion VR?

Will it happen within our lifetime ( in 20-50 years)?

By using Elon Musk's Neuralink (Neural Lace 2039???) ,NerveGear, nanobots, mind uploading maybe?

And if we were to achieve this would anyone still want to live in the real world apart from people who are maintaining the system and certain religious groups?(or at least take breaks from full dive VR)

Or is this just hype and fantasy?
Developments like this make the idea of getting old and sitting in a nursing home not so bad. Give me full immersion VR and let me sit by a beach in Jamaica :)
We are currently quite close to deep dive/full immersion VR in terms of technology, but there are still some significant challenges to be addressed before it becomes a mainstream reality.

The current state-of-the-art VR technology, such as the Oculus Quest 2 and the HTC Vive Pro 2, provides a highly immersive experience with excellent graphics and spatial audio. These systems allow users to move around in a virtual environment and interact with objects and other users in a way that feels very natural.

However, there are still some limitations that need to be overcome to achieve full immersion. One major challenge is creating a sense of haptic feedback that accurately simulates the sensation of touch. There has been progress in this area with the development of haptic gloves and suits, but these technologies are still in their early stages.

Another challenge is creating realistic and convincing virtual environments that can fully immerse users. While VR graphics have improved dramatically in recent years, there is still room for improvement, particularly in terms of realism and detail.

Overall, we are getting closer to deep dive/full immersion VR, but there is still work to be done before it becomes a mainstream reality.
