Host name issue

I am having in intriguing issue where I am unable to map via a computers hostname but can do so by the ip address. I am able to map and ping by hostname from a newly reimaged pc. What settings can I check to make sure the old pc can see this comp by hostname.

check that computer browser service, the server service, and the workstation service are all running. Do you have a dns server or wins server?

I will definitely check those services. We are running dns servers here. Its happening on several pcs on the network and just trying to figure it out for my own knowledge as to why this is happening. Although I have found a work around

make sure netbios network protocol is installed

how many machines are on the network? Check the hcp server and make sure the dns address is correct (if present) you may have to manually type in the ip of the dns server for each computer. Also make sure the each machine has the box checked (under tcp/ip properties/advanced) that say register this conections addresses in DNS, and the the server is listed.

What OS is the domain controller running?
What OS are the clients?
