I want to prove my step dad wrong about something: About how much power does hibernation use on a laptop? What exactly is going on? Isn't it just keeping the OS loaded in RAM? Thanks.

It obviously uses far less power when it's just regularly on, same with computers as well. With hibernation, everything loaded up on your system before you chose to hibernate it is saved onto disk, so next time you boot up your laptop, it'll be there. Although, with hibernation, you don't really want to use it for days on, it's more of a hour thing, like keep it on for 8 or 10 hours.

From my experience, it takes longer to start the machine the longer it has been in hibernation as well, which is wierd.
