This precaution won't prevent or mitigate all malware infections. Some malware can "escalate" its system privileges and give itself powers that a limited user doesn't have. But regular, run-of-the-mill malware, which is what most people face most of the time, doesn't do that.

I NEVER said it will protect you, I said its a rule you should follow - google defense in depth to understand the concept.

Nothing is 100% but you need to include different security controls and practices

I am a Senior Information Security Engineer, its my day job and I work with the entire security stack so Id like to think I know what I am talking about :cool:
