My wife brought home a friends laptop, asking if I could take a look at it. I just got told "It's acting funny. She thinks she has a virus."

I boot it up, and can't even get IE to run, so I've had to use CD's and a jump drive to transfer files back and forth.

I have been able to install and update Ad-aware and Spybot. Norton's was already installed, and I was able to get it updated.

Booted into safe mode, and followed as many of the instructions on the "Common Instructions" post as I could (Sorry, I couldn't run any of the online scans.) It will connect to the internet, it just won't open certain programs, and takes at least a full two minutes to open the start menu. I've installed all of the updates that I've been notified about through the automatic update XP has. There were at least 20 that I've done.

Any help I could get would be much appreciated.

Here's the HJT log.

Hi hilowe

Be sure to look this solution over before you begin. There are a some item(s) i'm not familar with. If you recognze any, then just omit them from this fix.

Download, unzip to your desktop CWShredder and run it, then:

1. Click "Check For Update" make sure your version is 2.14

(If an update isn't available, skip to step #4.)

2. Click "Click here to Download the upate".
3. When the new version has been downloaded, click "Save".
4. Click "Fix ->"

===============

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

WinTools
MyTotalSearch Email Plugin

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

===============

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Config..."
2. Click "Misc Tools"
3. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

c:\windows\system32\pfpqhru.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

All right,

Followed your instructions. The computer is now running much faster. I still cannot get Internet Explorer to run. I've installed FireFox, and can run that. I don't know what's going on.

Here's the HJT log file.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Be sure to look this solution over before you begin. There are a some item(s) i'm not familar with. If you recognze any, then just omit them from this fix.

Download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and install it. Update to the newest definitions. If you have trouble updating, you may do it manually at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/ Do NOT the Ewido scan yet.

Please download Nailfix at http://www.noidea.us/easyfile/file.php?download=20050515010747824 Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

==================

we need to remove a service.

Part 1

* Click Start>Run, type services.msc into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.
* Locate the System Startup Service service and double-click on it to open the Properties dialog.
* Click the Stop button.
* In the Startup type dropdown select Disabled.
* Click the Apply button and then the Ok button.
* Close the Services window

Part 2

* Click Start>Run, type cmd into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.
* Copy/paste the line below into the Command Prompt window and press the Enter key:
sc delete SvcProc
* Close the Command Prompt window

===============
Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Next run a full scan in Ewido. Save the log from the Ewido scan so that you can post it later.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qrmmalg] c:\windows\system32\hhxyqgd.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Stop-Sign_Install_Recovery] C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\ss_stopsign.exe -k

O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe (file missing)

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

files...

c:\windows\system32\hhxyqgd.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\ss_stopsign.exe
C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them from "Safe Mode".

===============

Post back a new log, and let me know how everything goes.

Lobos.

Thank you for all of your help Lobos. I feel like this laptop is just about done.

I'm still having a small problem with IE. I have to end task something called carpserv.exe, and then it will start. The only problem is that even though it will start, and take a address, it doesn't go anywhere. XP tells me that it stops responding at that point. I wonder if restoring the winsock would fix that?

I also have downloaded SP2 for XP. Maybe if I install that after the next go round, it will solve some of my problems.

Well, here's the HJT log.

Trojan: No ( Remove )

you may want to do

Go to Start->Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit OK. Let it scan. If it finds any files missing/corrupted, it may ask for the Windows CD.

Lobos

Thank you for all your help, Lobos. I'll look at unistalling that carpserv. I did run sfc /scannow, and it didn't find anything wrong. I did the upgrade to SP2, but haven't checked to make sure that IE is working.

Again, thank you for baby stepping me through getting that stuff of this laptop.

Sorry to keep bothering you guys here, but I need just a little bit more help with this laptop.

I installed XP SP2, and that fixed my problem with Internet Explorer, but I haven't had much time to work with this laptop since then. I thought I would run the online scans that I wasn't able to before, and Panda is telling me that there is still spyware on this computer.

Here is the log it let me save.

Give me just a couple of minutes, and I will post a new HJT log. I would appreciate if someone would take a quick look through it.
