I want to turn my old Cisnet pc into a home file server. Will this be okay as a server?

2.0 ghz celeron processor. Thinking about changing the heatsink.

512mb RAM: Havn't figured out the speed yet. Looks like DDR266 or DDR200??? Willing to upgrade if necessary

230? watt PSU. I'll probably change it because its too loud, old, and I'll need more connectors for extra HDDs

I'm thinking of buying a PCI to internal SATA card since all this pc has is 3 IDE slots (used up by the HDD, CD-ROM drive, and Floppy drive).

I'll also install Linux.

Can I do this?

That will be perfect for a home file server. Just make sure you get a good gigabit Ethernet connection for best speeds.

OR you can just install a second NIC and bridge the connections in the OS.

Also don't use ubuntu server if that's what you had in mind. It's stability and features are just plain abysmal. Use Debian Lenny (5.0)and you will have much better results.

Thanks. I'm sure which distro to use yet.

Would I be better off using a 5400rpm HDD, or 7200rpm?
