i was trying to repair a friends dell but it wouldnt let the windows set up do a repair.. so we decided to just format the drive and start it fresh... now when it goes into the 3rd stage of the installation it has an error saying "Parameter is incorrect" does that have to do with the hard drive? or can u only install windows from the dell supplied CDs?

Sounds strange to me. If you delete all the partitions and do a full format in the NTFS system, there should be no problem. Once i did have an instance but then i just shut down the laptop left it for a while and tried later. hey presto! Also make sure that there are no massive scratched on the CD.

Branded recovery cds just apply the default programs that are programmed for the brand
