my 40gb hard drive cannot be read. it says it needs to be formatted, even though a couple days ago it was working fine. there must be a way of getting all my data back, i have heard of some software that can do this, but i don't know whether they would work in this case.

ERD commander might work. You might also be able to use something like Linux Knoppix. Both load an OS from CD. You can look at the contents of your hard drive.

Another way would be to take your 40gb drive and slave it to another pc and transfer files over ... that is, if it hasn't been wiped of data from an attempted re-format.

If it's been wiped or FDisk'd then you're looking at a very expensive process to recover data. You would need to send your drive into a data recovery specialist.

GetDataBack at runtime.org. You will have to have another medium installed to put the recovered data on.

tried using suse linux live cd and putting it as slave, but nothing was there on linux and it wasn't able to be read by windows. i downloaded drive rescue, and after hours of trying to identify the files, i got most of my files back. i backed them up and formatted the drive, because it still wasn't being read.

I just helped a guy on another forum. He had formatted the drive, mixed ntfs and fat32 and he was able to retrieve all the data with GetDataBack.
He said it took less than an hour.
