hard drive question, sata 1.5 and 3.0

im looking into getting a new hard drive. My motherboard supports sata 1.5gbs, the only 1.5gbs one I can find is a WD raptor 74gb for $125cdn..more than I want to spend. All the other ones are 3.0gbs, so my question is can i use a 3.0 in a 1.5 board? And will it be noticeabley faster than my Ultra ata 100 ide drive?

My IDE drive is NOISY, so i wouldnt mind even if it wouldnt be much faster.

It will work! It is fully backwards compatible.

SATA 3.0 has nothing to do with speed, it's all about thoroughput, unless things have changed since the last time I heard anything about it, SATA 3.0 is about as useful as PCI-E 2.0...

Don't worry bout it, just buy a SATAII 3.0gbs drive and it will work.

his like 99% of harddrives around cant saturate the SATA1 bus....

speed is limited by the drives... not the SATA standard...

ok the biggest difference between sata 1.5gb and sata 3gb is that sata 3gb supports this:

Basically it totally destroys cpu overhead, enhances the firmware, and allows less movement in the drive.. And can make full use of 16mb and 32mb cache (well probably not 32mb)
