It is all in the tone mapping you do, you can make an HDR look barely different from a regular photograph or you can take it to a severe look like most of them I have. I personally like the aggressive style.
 
Most beginners *not directed at you lance* like to turn up the luminosity in photo matix or whatever program they are using. In photomatix, if the setting ends in -osity, then if you turn up that setting the pictures looks more fake. Some people like the more aggressive style, some don't. I really gotta take it easy on the luminosity slider too. You can get rid of the photomatix water mark by buying the program or through other means of obtaining the software.
 
Ya, I have been messing with the settings.

I made this picture recently with different shutter speeds and lighter adjustments in photomatix.

HDR is a High Dynamic Range photo. Basically a bunch of pictures taking at different shutter speeds then put togethor to combine all the lighting.

I am using a DSLR, Nikon D60. I think J12 is using a high in point and shooter

no, I used a program called photomatix to combine the photos and tweak the settings.
