The problem with recommendations here is that it all depends on your ears. $50 is still a very low price point for speakers as far as I'm concerned... and one person's chalk will be another's cheese. Lots of people these days for instance seem to like stupidly loud bass, lots of snappy top end and not much in between (classic smiley face eq!) Personally i can't think of much worse...
Best advice I have for you is to see if you can pop down to a local PC store and listen to some there if you can - that'll give you a far better idea of what suits you
