Getting Peculiar Files Missing

Just noticed my hosts file completely missing from my drive. Or at least I thought it was missing until trying to create a new one. It was completely hidden (even with hidden folders on) and locked. I had to boot into Knoppix to get it back. I can't see anything the really stands out here but I'm not the greatest with these:

Yeah it's my "mac launcher" bar. Works great. I prefer it over using the desktop for icons.

Thanks bud I appreciate it. Just needed a second look. Now all I have to do is figure out why system files are being locked and disappearing!

Well they could have been modified by some software you installed. Maybe something like a firewall or Comodo Dragon Browser? Maybe they werent missing completely. I see you said you had hidden folders showing, but what about the option to show system protected files? It could be that those files were be protected by the system from modification, possibly due to some software being installed, and that is why they were still hidden even given the fact you had hidden files on. It is a possibility.

Well after I booted into Knoppix and restored it the random popups disappeared so I think there was something controlling it. I did have system files turned on as well. It was a very weird popup. Happened on all browsers no matter which I used.
